This was a rather large thread on the MLG forums so I thought I'd post it here.

I do think that this applies to GW players (noob! gtfo! gfy!) as much as it does to XBL players.

Thoughts please?

I'm not gonna lie though, this is just about the angriest I've ever seen Sessler.

I'm surprised some ignorant person didn't bring this up at E3.

get over it, they're just words. they're only offensive if you take offense to them, and if you do, that's your fault and an issue you'll have to deal with.

There's a difference between being insulted and being disrespected, with the latermost being less of something you can just "ignore".

I'm sure all of us shrug off 100x insults in the game a day, but when something is insulting to your character, personally, then that's where rants like Adams come in.

You can play the tough guy ruitine (spl?) like the guy above suggested, or you can pitch in (using the report system instead of retaliating) to help stop crudeness on online games.

If I start getting ignorant posts like "there's an ignore button for a reason", please just lock the thread.

there's a difference between disrespecting your rights and disrespecting your ego. the former is unacceptable, but it's not what Sessler or this thread are talking about. the latter is just another term for an insult. like i said, they're just words

Th first issue ill bring up is regular cursing. Im not going to lie, i used to curse off even when i was a little kid (im thinking around 7-10). I personally think curse words are overrated. If you want to know why kids curse its because they feel grown up and want to get a lot of attention. I say just ignore it, curse words mean as much as you take it. They are part of our history to show an "extreme form" of badmouthing, and mean something cultural instead of what we view them today, such as the middle finger deriving from the use of the middle finger to pull an arrow on a bow in the medieval ages... They survive to mean what they mean simply because we view them to be bad words and nothing more.

Overall- immoral but acceptable

Second, i now refer to what Sessler says, which is about the little kids saying racist and profane comments, ive personally never witnessed. I know that yes they exist but they have to be in a small quantity, because ive played a few matches on Halo. I did play on social a few times, because of the required maps. My biggest problem with this, i know that kids probably do it, is that the use of LIVE succeeds the rating genre. A rated M game, with the correct amount of racist comments/ community could easily turn a game into a rated A game. I really think that though innovative, something needs to be done. I don't want a strict law on them, but the "we are not responsible for the rating online" thing is crap. I don't know how, but something needs to be done. I may even go as far as ban mics for 18+ people only.

I also thing some other things on LIVE, or PSN for you PS3 users, need to be changed. Im tired of having little kids who want to get to the next title and resort to whining annoying little comments to order to win. I was once with some pre teen kid on a team who was so focused on winning and doing everything perfectly that he kept complaining that i was stupid, I grabbed the sword and just killed him he was so annoying. After then he screamed so hard in the mic that i swear my ears started bleeding. I just want to enjoy the game, not take it so seriously to have some kid yell at me while im trying to blow some steam. They need to make different rooms for this (possibly casual or hardcore, something like that)

Overall: I find it highly disrespectful for kids to use profane comments at adults though. Every once in a while I see some guy who is moral and takes charge and tells them its wrong, usually that does the trick. But sometimes with the anonymity, kids just laugh with their friends and don't stop. It MIGHT be ok with friends of their age, but at least not with adults thats just plain disrespectful.

He makes a very good point. But a few of you posting before me missed it.

He's not talking about feeling insulted personally... he's an adult and he's past that... Ramia. His rant is not about him. It's about caring how you represent the gaming community which is a worthy ideal. However, he appears to be myopic in his memory and therefore a little unrealistic.

I'd put the people spamming the epithets he's referring to at about 13-17 years of age. It's certainly not good behavior, but it's typical "teenage hormonal imbalance, fragile sense of self and still trying to impress but clueless about what's impressive" behavior. I remember well

rhamia.... i worded my post miserably. i was simply saying that when you are older( over 25 we'll say) i guess listening to people praddle on with obscene and graphically nasty language is just irritating. ya get to a point in life where gutter mouth isnt impressive or "cool" its just sad. that was my point. i enjoy a well thought out rant more then anyone. example:: i like dennis miller. but some tool spitting out an entire sentence comprised entirely of curse words isnt really impressive. i understand kids "act out" but come on, you can make a point and rip someone apart pretty good without talking about someones mothers reproductive system?? maybe im wrong.

maybe i expect way too much from people. maybe talking that way is cool. But those who think its all good to talk like that ill leave you with this. imagine JFK speaking...." Like ask not what yer like F&[email protected] country can do 4 you, but like what you can do 4 your bitch assed country and stuff" lets hear it for todays youth WOOOOOT

Snograt you so crazy!!!! ON TOPIC:: i dont ask anyone to act in any way. if someone wants to act like there two thats there perogative. i dont have to like it though. theres ladies that play this game and there are little kids who play as well. why should they have to see that rubbish. now someone will go on a rant about me being a baby and go cry QQ (whatever the flick that means) meh. this is pointless and ive added to it. my apologies. proceed with the curse filled rant.

Cronk

ps new petition. perma bans for people that curse more then 10 times per minute OR using all curse words in a sentence.

If you're offended by 10 year olds on the Internet, you probably should wake up and realize there's bigger problems going on besides someone insulting your sexuality (I assume this Sessler guy is gay, or else he wouldn't have taken so much offense to the word "faggot"). Seriously, mass genocide in Darfur, or ignorant prepubescent 12 year olds on XBL? Hmm.....

QFT.

Now, I don't think people being rude and offensive online is a good thing, but people really need to stop taking it so godamn personal. It's a random person on the internet insulting you. If he calls you a faggot, he's either randomly insulting you for whatever reason, or you made it clear that you were a homosexual. Don't talk about your personal life on the internet if you can't handle idiots insulting you.

Anonymity + audience = total fkwad. It's always going to be this way. You can either complain and complain or complain, or learn to ignore it. The latter is going to get you somewhere, the former is going to make people want to insult you even more. It's how the internet works.
